Open by design. Yours to shape.
Moodle™ is the open canvas for organizations whose LMS is a product they brand, extend, and sell through — not a locked enterprise suite.
Open by design
The world’s most-used LMS — 20 years of pedagogical depth, thousands of plugins, and no proprietary lock-in.
Yours to brand & shape
Full control of the learner experience, from theme to workflow to language — so the platform disappears and your brand carries.
Built to sell learning
Native integration with Lambda Store™ turns Moodle from a course-delivery tool into a full digital learning business.
Self-hosted Moodle is a project. Managed Moodle is a product.
Anyone can download Moodle™. What separates a weekend install from a platform your members trust is how it’s hosted, configured, and supported. That’s the part Lambda runs.
Managed enterprise hosting
99.9% uptime SLA, encryption at rest and in transit, automated backups, disaster recovery, and the security posture regulated buyers require.
Configured by Moodle specialists
Theme, workflow, plugin selection, learner pathways, and integrations — delivered in 6–12 weeks for most deployments.
Store™ & Zoola™, natively connected
Sell your courses and measure what’s working — without stitching Moodle to Shopify to a separate BI tool.
24/7 support since 2003
Real Moodle engineers who’ve run it for two decades — not first-line ticket handlers reading from a script.
When your LMS is a product, not a policy.
Associations
Sell CE, run member education, and manage credentialing renewals — turning learning into your most reliable non-dues revenue stream.
Training companies
Launch a branded storefront and sell courses, cohorts, and certifications to individuals and B2B accounts — all from one platform.
Higher ed & continuing studies
Deliver academic and professional programs on the LMS your faculty already know — branded to your institution.
Nonprofits & mission-driven
Reach large learner populations on an open, cost-efficient platform — without an enterprise-suite price tag.
Built to help you reach more and sell more.
Learners reached
Across associations, training companies, and educational programs worldwide — on Moodle™.
Years running Moodle
Hosting, theming, and supporting Moodle™ since 2003 — longer than most of the SaaS platforms you’re comparing.
Uptime
Enterprise-grade reliability, so your storefront and your courses are open when learners show up.
“From the very beginning, they took the time to understand our needs and worked with us as true partners, not just a vendor. I’d recommend them to any organization looking for a reliable, trusted LMS partner.”
Elena Pomazanova · VP, Information Technology — New Look Vision Group
Everything Moodle can do — set up and supported.
Course & curriculum
Structured courses, categories, and curricula that scale from one program to thousands.
Learner pathways
Prerequisites, conditional release, and guided pathways that keep learners moving.
Quizzes & assessments
Rich question types, grading, and feedback for real assessment, not just completion.
Certifications & badges
Issue certificates and open badges that learners can share and verify.
Forums & social learning
Discussion, cohorts, and peer learning that build community around your programs.
Custom themes & branding
Your look, your UX — the Moodle you remember, redesigned around your brand.
Need multitenancy?
Moodle LMS doesn’t include it. If you need separate tenants for clients, regions, or business units, Totara does, and we run both.
Mobile learning
Learn on any device, with a branded mobile experience for members on the go.
SCORM & xAPI
Bring existing content and track detailed learning activity across your ecosystem.
Lambda Store™
Native eCommerce — sell courses, bundles, and subscriptions right from Moodle.
Zoola Analytics™
Reporting and dashboards that show what’s driving completion and revenue.
SSO & HRIS
Single sign-on and HR/CRM integrations that fit Moodle into your existing stack.
What Moodle LMS is.
Moodle™ is an open-source learning management system developed by Moodle HQ and a global community, with registered sites in more than 230 countries. It covers courses, assessment, completion tracking, certificates, badges, mobile learning and integrations, and its plugin ecosystem extends almost every part of the platform.
Because it is open source, there is no licence fee and you own your platform: you choose where it runs, how it looks and who supports it. Read the full guide to what Moodle is and how it works.
What Moodle costs.
Moodle LMS has no licence fee and no per-user charge. The real cost is running it well, in four parts:
Infrastructure
Servers, storage, backups, a staging site and monitoring.
Setup
Theme, configuration, integrations and migration from your current platform.
People
Administrators and specialists who answer questions and fix problems.
Maintenance
Security patches and two major Moodle releases a year, tested before they go live.
We quote all four together, scoped to your programs, so you can compare one figure with the full cost of running Moodle yourself. See our Moodle pricing guide for MoodleCloud plans, self-hosting costs and a three-year worksheet.
Three ways to run Moodle.
| Factor | Self-hosted | MoodleCloud | Managed by Lambda |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who runs servers and upgrades | Your team | Moodle HQ | Lambda Learning |
| Plugins and themes | Anything you install and maintain | Fixed plugin set, Boost theme only | Your choice, reviewed by our implementation team |
| Users | No limit | Up to 750 | No limit |
| Data location | Wherever you host | Australia, Europe or USA | AWS Canada (Central) for Canadian data |
| Support | Your staff and community forums | Email and knowledge base | 24/7 dedicated support |
| Best for | Teams with Moodle and server skills | Small sites with standard needs | Organizations that want control without running servers |
More detail: MoodleCloud plans and limits and self-hosting vs managed hosting.
Where your Moodle runs.
We run Moodle on AWS. Canadian data stays in the AWS Canada (Central) region, on infrastructure that holds SOC 2 Type II, configured to support PIPEDA, HIPAA and provincial privacy requirements. Every site includes encryption at rest and in transit, automated backups, disaster recovery and a 99.9% uptime SLA.
For regions, security and migration details, see Moodle hosting in Canada.
What Moodle LMS doesn’t do.
Separate tenants
Moodle LMS doesn’t include multitenancy. If you need separate tenants for clients, regions or business units, Totara does, and we run both.
Workforce compliance at scale
Moodle tracks completions and certificates well. Recertification cycles, organizational hierarchies and audit-ready compliance reporting are where Totara is built to lead.
A separate edition
Moodle Workplace is a separately licensed edition sold through Moodle’s partner network. We don’t sell it; we run Moodle LMS and Totara.
Cross-system analytics
Built-in reports answer course-level questions. For dashboards that combine LMS, HR, CRM and finance data, add Zoola Analytics.
How implementation works.
- Scope. Programs, users, integrations, data residency and timeline.
- Configure. Theme, course categories, roles, enrolment and learner pathways.
- Integrate. Single sign-on, HRIS or membership systems, CRM, Lambda Store and Zoola. See Moodle integrations.
- Migrate. Courses, users, grades and history from your current Moodle or another LMS, with zero-downtime moves for existing Moodle sites.
- Test and train. Administrators and course creators learn the platform before learners arrive.
- Launch and support. Go live with 24/7 support from day one.
Upgrades without surprises.
Moodle ships two major releases a year, plus security updates. Each one can affect plugins, themes and integrations. We apply security patches, test plugin compatibility before every upgrade and schedule upgrades around your training calendar, so a new version never lands in the middle of a deadline.

Frequently asked questions.
Isn’t Moodle free? Why do I need Lambda?
The software is free; running it well isn’t. Self-hosted Moodle means you own the servers, security, updates, backups, theming, and support. Lambda turns that project into a managed product — enterprise hosting, expert configuration, and 24/7 support — so your team runs programs, not infrastructure.
How does Moodle compare to Totara, and which one do we need?
Moodle™ is for organizations whose LMS is a learner-facing product they brand, extend, and sell through — associations, training companies, educational programs. Totara™ is for organizations whose LMS is an internal system of record for workforce compliance and audit — healthcare, financial services, regulated enterprises. Some use both. Lambda runs both, so we’ll point you to the right one honestly.
Can we sell courses directly on Moodle?
Yes. With Lambda Store™ connected natively, Moodle becomes a storefront — sell courses, bundles, subscriptions, and member pricing, with checkout and enrollment handled automatically. No stitching Moodle to a separate eCommerce platform.
How much does managed Moodle from Lambda cost?
It depends on scale, integrations, and configuration. Book a demo and we’ll scope it to your actual programs — no obligation.
How long does a Moodle implementation take?
Most deployments go live in 6–12 weeks, depending on theming, integrations, and how much content and configuration is involved. We’ll give you a realistic timeline during scoping.
What happens if we want to leave Lambda — do our courses come with us?
Yes. Moodle is open-source and your data is yours. Your Moodle courses, content, and learner records export in standard formats. We’d rather earn the renewal than trap you into it.
